Having hobbies is an excellent way to spend your spare time. Whether you enjoy crocheting dolls, cooking your favorite dishes, or hitting the gym, it’s a beneficial way to relieve stress and find your purpose. But how do you find hobbies, and where do you begin??
Why are hobbies important?
Having hobbies has proven to be helpful to your mental health. They help you find and enhance your purpose. It gives you an outlet for stress and reduces your risk of having depression and other cognitive diseases like dementia [1]. So how can you find hobbies and develop good habits?
Go back to your childhood.
If you want to find a hobby but don’t know where to begin, think back to your childhood. Did you have any favorite hobbies as a child? Did you draw? Have you perhaps played with clay? How about climbing and running around? Maybe you enjoyed painting as a child? – whatever you loved doing as a child, it can help you start finding a hobby. Recalling your childhood hobbies doesn’t mean you have to do the same hobbies again. But, it is an excellent start to finding something you will enjoy.
Turn what you already love doing into a hobby.
Hobbies are generally things that you enjoy doing. You may not know it, but you already have them. All you need to do is to develop them further. Let’s say you enjoy walking your dog; why not volunteer at your local dog shelter? If you love watching comedy shows, why not try listing for an improv class? – whatever you love to do, start there.
Try something new.
When it comes to hobbies, it is a lot easier to do something that you already know. However, trying something that you’ve never done is challenging. Think of some things that you’ve always wanted to try and do them. It could be anything too. You may not be musically inclined, but if you take that violin class or that drum lesson, perhaps you might just discover your hidden talent! It is never too late to start music lessons, so you might as well give it a try.
Find an activity that makes you productive.
Some people enjoy doing things that make them feel like they have accomplished something. While others enjoy being idle, some of us love doing something that makes us feel productive. And if you belong in that category, finding a good hobby that will keep you effective is essential.
If you love setting goals to pursue and aiming to be a better version of yourself, find a hobby that fits your lifestyle. If you love running, training for a marathon is an excellent hobby. What about organizing and cleaning your house? If you enjoy these things, you can always find a way to form a hobby.
Try different hobbies until they stick with you.
If you don’t know where to begin, you can always dive blindly and try all sorts of hobbies. Sounds drastic, right? But sometimes, you need to tread the waters until you find something you genuinely love! The truth is, you cannot see what you like unless you give it a try.

Whether it’s yoga class, crafting, or painting class, having a friend willing to go hunting for a hobby with you is always a good time.
Find a Hobby You Will Love
It might take a while to find out what you genuinely like but give it time. Keep putting yourself out there and connect with people. Explore options, and try new things that are exciting to you. You will eventually find a hobby that feels right.
